When we rescued a terrified grey and white dog earlier this year, we didn't know if he'd make it through the night. We could see that he had been abused, neglected and starved. His ears were badly injured, he was painfully thin and a life-threatening infection raged throughout his fragile body.

We named him Hero to honor his strong, brave and dignified spirit. Although fear and pain clouded his eyes, he was a survivor, and we were determined to do everything we could for him.

The day we carried Hero through our doors, he was barely clinging to life. Our shelter veterinarian and medical staff immediately went to work to save him. It was touch and go at first, but day after day, Hero grew stronger. We celebrated when we saw that his spirit had survived the nightmare he had lived through.

Because of that brave spirit, Hero was ready for adoption much sooner than we expected. We created a video highlighting Hero's amazing story in the hopes that a family would see it and fall in love with this amazing dog. You can watch that video right here.

Just a few weeks ago, gentle, loving Hero found his forever home, where he is now thriving! What a wonderful gift to know Hero is spending this Thanksgiving surrounded by a loving family. We know he is so thankful for his new home.

On behalf of Hero and thousands of other animals the SPCA of Texas has rescued, healed and found homes for in 2012, thank you. Thousands more animals out there still need us, so we're also thankful that we can count on you as we work to do even more for the animals.
